Our Story

How it all started...

Our lead pastor, Dorrien Hinsey, began his calling in the ministry in 1996 while attending American Baptist College in Nashville, TN.  After graduating, Dorrien went to work full time in the ministry with his father in the Bahamas before God called him to continue his studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. While at Southern, Dorrien attained his Masters of Divinity and Doctoral degrees and met his lovely wife Janice. In 2000, Dorrien and Janice moved to Cincinnati, Ohio.
In 2001, Dorrien began working at the Vineyard Community Church in Cincinnati, OH (known for teaching and modeling what it means to live an outward focused life) and continued to take on a variety of roles while there.

On October 2006, Dorrien and his wife Janice felt God’s calling on them to create what they would define as a “Different Kind of Church”-one that would not necessarily change the message of the church or God but express the message in a more relevant way for those not a part of the church or those who may have left the church for whatever reason.  It would be a place where people would feel welcomed to come as they are, feel safe and secure and would welcome the challenge to live a better life.
In September 2007, Dorrien and Janice began hosting gatherings to invite others to learn more about Compass and join in its mission.  On November 11, 2007 at 10:30am to 11:30am, Compass held its first Sunday Celebration. Dorrien was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas and Janice was born and raised in Huntsville, Alabama.  Dorrien and Janice have two boys Alex and Dyson.

“All my life I have watched people in the church world attend church, serve at church, give to the church, sing at church, be the church all because of the LAW of God (rules).  What if we could change this?  What if we could create a church where people feel free.  Not compelled to do those things because of the law of God but they attend church, serve at church, give to the church, sing at church, be the church all because of their LOVE for God.”
